pastel and ink on 300gsm archival art paper
2010 is a time of transition for artist Wyn Vogel - always evolving and experimenting - this year has meant a new studio and new environs to explore and capture.
The new studio will allow Wyn to explore the medium of oil glazing and further work with impasto oil techniques.
Recent works have gone to private collections both here in Australia, most recently Toowoomb and also offshore. These join other paintings and photographic/mixed media pieces in local and international collections.
Until mid 2008 Wyn, had the unbridled benefit of two studios. One tucked away amongst the tropical trees in Bardon, Queensland and the second hidden away in the old flour store above one of the oldest buildings (circa 1872) in Port Fairy, Victoria - both with amazing northern light. The changing and moving landscapes of two such different regions mean Wyn is able to explore a broad range of structures and shapes, colours and textures. This combined with an early childhood in the Blue Mountains, NSW and time spent in the northern Queensland light, has had a huge influence over the work she produces.
Wyn has painted since her earliest remembrance and formally studied art under the guidance of art teacher Peter Dolan. On completion of the NSW Higher School Certificate, she was awarded the Certificate of Merit for Level 1 Art in NSW.
Although accepted for entrance to East Sydney Technical College – the National Art School – Wyn pursued tertiary studies only to realise later her need to paint.
As part of her ongoing commitment to sharing this amazing creative platform, Wyn established a Community Arts Group for the Uniting Church in the Far North Queensland town of Collinsville – the aim was at this stage was looking to integrate a fast growing community, moving into an isolated North Queensland mining town.
This role provided the opportunity to understand people, in a complex community and provided a platform to explore and experiment with emerging, as well as experienced artists and other teachers.
Wyn has spent time in Brisbane and then Gladstone where she became an active member of the local art community. Exhibiting at the Potters Gallery and selling to many local and international visitors, Wyn took part in joint exhibitions both at the gallery and in the local Shire theatre foyer – (hung beside Rolf Harris)!
Wyn opened her own studio gallery, “The Corporate Gift” located in the then newly developed – heritage listed Beaufort Heritage Hotel, now the Stamford Plaza.
From this location Wyn exhibited her own and other artist’s works – holding eight formal exhibitions over a period of 4 years and selling to the corporate market, as well as the local tourist and business trade attracted to the site and the nearby Botanical Gardens.
A temporary move to Melbourne in 1996 brought new and challenging stimulation – Wyn pursued her artwork – translating her original work to a selection of cards and posters.
